The SparkZ doesn’t throw your kid in at the deep end, it eases them in, then lets them decide how deep they want to go. Three speed modes take riders from a sensible 7mph all the way up to 25mph when the confidence catches up with the ambition. Some say the low speed mode is for beginners. Parents of eight year olds will tell you it’s for their own peace of mind. Either way, the SparkZ grows with the rider and that’s exactly the point.
The 12 inch front and 10 inch rear knobbly tyres weren’t chosen for their looks, although they do look properly purposeful. They find grip where other tyres give up, across mud, loose gravel, forest trails and the kind of terrain that ends most rides early. The steel frame soaks up the sort of abuse that only a determined young rider can deliver, and at 37kg it sits low, stable and planted no matter what the ground has to say about it.
Front and rear hydraulic disc brakes give the SparkZ the kind of stopping power that parents quietly appreciate and kids eventually come to respect. The inverted USD hydraulic front forks and rear mono shock handle the bumps so the rider stays comfortable and in control, even when the trail gets ambitious. Its the sort of setup you’d expect on something considerably more expensive, which at £699.99 makes it even harder to argue with.
The 48V 14Ah lithium battery delivers up to 25km per charge, which depending on the terrain and how hard the throttle gets twisted, translates to somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes of proper off-road riding. Charge time is 8 hours, so the routine writes itself, ride all afternoon, plug in before bed, wake up and do it all again. Clean, quiet and zero emissions, the only thing the SparkZ leaves behind is tyre tracks and a very big grin.
The fully automatic chain drive means there are no gears to worry about, no clutch to learn and no complicated decisions to make at speed. Twist the throttle and go, its genuinely that straightforward. The rev and go transmission keeps the focus exactly where it should be for younger riders, on the trail ahead and not on which gear they’re supposed to be in. Some say simplicity is boring. Those people have clearly never watched an eight year old disappear into a field at 15mph with a helmet slightly too big for their head.
